Slow Cooker Cleaning Tips
One of the best parts of the cold weather season is the delicious, homey food. Soups, pasta, meats, and stews are all waiting to be devoured. But the winter brings with it cold commutes and tired days, and you’re too sleepy to come home to cook a large meal. The easiest way to make these hearty foods? With a slow cooker!
But any fan of the slow cooker will tell you that they can be a nightmare to clean. Your food is baking itself onto the inside of your slow cooker for hours at a time. And despite popular belief, it is possible to burn food in a slow cooker (not that that’s happened to me …). And when burnt bits get caked onto the inside of that ceramic pot, you can be left with a greasy ring for months to come.
Below you’ll find the easiest way to get your slow cooker to clean itself without any added elbow grease or scrubbing.
Did you know: Slow cookers are also called “crock pots,” which is actually a brand of the slow cooker! Just like Chap Stick or Kleenex, Crock Pot is a popular brand name of a specific type of slow cooker machine.
How To Clean Your Slow Cooker
What You’ll Need:
- Dirty slow cooker
- Warm water
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 1 cup baking soda
- Additional baking soda for sprinkling
To Wash The Ceramic Insert:
- Fill your cooker with warm water. Fill it so the waterline sits just above the ring of food or 3/4 from the top, whichever is higher.
- Add one cup of white vinegar into the slow cooker.
- Take 1 cup of baking soda. Add a little bit of baking soda at a time. You’ll see a chemical reaction in the slow cooker immediately. Wait for the reaction to die down before adding more baking soda. Again wait for the reaction to settle, then add more. Do this until the 1-cup of baking soda is in the pot.
- Put the lid on the slow cooker. Set to low.
- Leave for at least 4 hours. For best results, leave overnight. This will lift away all of the caked food and start to sanitize the cooker.
- Turn off the slow cooker and take the lid off.
- Let the heat escape the pot for at least 1 hour.
- Once cooled, remove the ceramic insert. Wash in the sink as normal with warm water and soap. The food should come off easily without scrubbing.
If you don’t have time for this process, leave the mixture in for an hour or as long as you can. If there is still crusty food, sprinkle baking soda on the caked parts. Scrub with a cloth or sponge. The baking soda will work as an exfoliator to help remove the gunk without significant elbow grease. Avoid using steel wool or harsh scrubbers, as this can damage the inside of the ceramic.
Pro-Tip: Don’t use cold water in your slow cooker. The ceramic will not be able to withstand the cold water against the heat of the cooker.
To Wash The Base And Lid:
To clean the lid, use hot water and soap as normal. If it has gunk on it, sprinkle baking soda and rub with a cloth. The lids are often dishwasher friendly as well. Usually, lids are glass, so don’t use a harsh brush that can damage the material.
To clean the shell of the slow cooker, dip a soft cloth in warm, soapy water. Rub gently. Dry thoroughly to avoid rusting.
How To Prevent Dirty Slow Cookers
To avoid having to deal with super-dirty slow cookers, try the below three prevention tips:
- Spray your slow cooker with a non-stick cooking spray before inserting food. This
will prevent sticking and burnt bits attaching to the pot.
- Use a plastic Crock Pot liner. These work like oven bags to protect your cooker. These are especially useful when cooking with melted cheese or sugary sauces that burn easily, like BBQ.
- Don’t overcook or burn your food. The longer your food stays in the pot, the more it will cake onto the sides.
